CHAPTER HISTORY

Visionaries in the form of three Sorors (Veronica Renae Crutches, Mechelle B. Hale, Janice L. Jones) sought to form a chapter of our great Sisterhood to serve the communities of Henry County, Georgia.  As one of the fastest growing counties in America from 1999 to 2004, the need for service to our Black communities became increasingly evident. Seeing this great need, these Sorors decided to contact our National Headquarters. They were directed to their local chapter, which included Henry County along with six other counties in their service area.

These energetic Sorors met with the local chapter to discuss various community programs.  They continued to meet with this chapter throughout the sorority year.  However, Henry County was a service area that did not have the much needed visibility from a community and programmatic standpoint. The recent and continued projected growth required a much more direct and focused effort. Sorors Crutches, Hale, and Jones began to discuss the need and feasibility of starting a chapter exclusively in the Henry County area. They identified the needs for this county to be serviced by Delta, and met regularly to develop a strategy and briefing for the sorority’s leadership.

During this time, a steering committee was formed and continued to identify inactive Sorors living and working in Henry County. The steering committee grew to six with the addition of Sorors Gloria A. Lee, Simone W. Morton and Daisey L. Smith and continued to identify more than two hundred sorors in the Henry County area. After months of research, the statistics concluded the enormous growth in the Henry County area needed the presence of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust.

After much hard, steady teamwork, and prayers, the vision became a reality!! The 969th chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  Henry County Alumnae Chapter was chartered on December 4, 2004.
